Keeping the layout is not a compromise here, it is what let the budget go into the parts you touch. The cabinetry went pale and taller, running to the ceiling so there is no dust shelf on top, the island grew to the largest size that still leaves a metre of clearance on every side, and the wall ovens were stacked to free a full run of counter. The brass pendants are the only thing in the room that dates it, and they are the cheapest thing to change.
